The monopoly that Cook / Greenaway had on hit songwriting for most major artists in the late 60s and early 70s was staggering. I think the list runs to around 200. It's just mind boggling. And all the songs were really good.

These two wrote million sellers after million sellers. Their names were on so many hit records for just about every big artist in the 1960's and 1970's. Incredible when you go through them all just how many there were.

My favourite song from the 70s

Vernon Merrick was a member of the Sapphires. After the band broke up he eventually joined the Army where I met him - in 1969 he was a sergeant, my first boss in the Intelligence Corps. A wonderful guy who eventually became an officer. And he's still with us although now in his 80s(?)!

He really pushed this terrible song and thought it was going to be a big novelty hit but it’s not even bad/good and isn’t catchy at all
